Grand Opening October 2026
Our Purpose and Vision
At the heart of the Japanese American Museum of Washington’s (JAMW) mission is the reconstruction of a contemporary Japanese American (JA) community—one that is reflective, expansive, and deeply inclusive. While honoring the legacy of our ancestors, we are equally committed to shaping a future-facing identity that resonates with today’s diverse realities.
We recognize that many in our community are of mixed-race descent or have been historically overlooked due to social, geographic, or generational disconnection. JAMW will intentionally adopt the inclusion principle that “anyone with Japanese ancestry no matter the amount, is abundantly Japanese American.”

What Sets Us Apart
All About Us
Sharing and preserving Washington State Japanese Americans rich history and culture. The Japanese American Museum of Washington is dedicated to providing a comprehensive insight into the history and culture of Japanese Americans throughout Washington state. Our mission is to help promote awareness and understanding of the Japanese American communities experience from the first Japanese immigrants that arrived in Washington State to our current day Japanese Americans that continue to further our contributions in our Washington communities and throughout the country. The museum will strive to help promote and support all of the organizations providing important information and exhibits on the history of Japanese Americans such as Densho, Yakima Museum Exhibit Land of Joy and Sorrow, Japanese American Issei Pioneer Museum, Nisei Veteran's Committee Memorial Hall, Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington, and The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial. It is important to broaden the awareness and help secure the important stories of Washington State Japanese Americans from the first immigrants from Japan, the experience of building their commuunities in a new land, to the travesty of Executive Order 9066 during the war to rebuilding their lives. It will also be a place where current Washington State Japanese Americans who are making important contributions to our state and country will be featured and honored. Join us in ensuring the rich history is preserved and help contnue the rich heritage of our Japanese communities and providing a stronger foundation for our future generations.
